Germans were in getting the Chinase to believe that
the goods they were supplying were of German
manufacture, and on the outbreak of war when the
+
Chinese knew that no goods could be shipped from
Germany, the value of the stocks of piece goods in
German hands were greatly enhanced for a few days
until the Chinese discovered that they were actually
British made and that further supplies were obtainable
through British hands. It is believed that the Germen
Government were prepared to establish themselves in
China at all costs until the day came when they had
successfully ousted the British merchants. The British
merchants have had it proved over and over again that
business was being booked by German houses at a
fraction under cost and are able to prove that this
method was not merely one to introduce any particular
line on the market, but a practice they kept up
season after season.
Consequently, it is not
difficult to understand why British merbhants were
gradually losing ground in the East.
Yours sincerely
